Predation capacity of soil-dwelling predatory mites on two major maize pests

چکیده

The western corn rootworm Diabrotica virgifera (WCR), and the wireworm Agriotes sordidus (WW), whose eggs first instar larvae develop in few centimeters of soil, are major crop pests. As soil-dwelling predatory mites known as potential biocontrol agents against many pests, we investigated predation capacity Stratiolaelaps scimitus, Gaeolaelaps aculeifer Macrocheles robustulus on immature stages WCR WW a laboratory setting. While were never consumed, all three predator species attacked both larvae. these results need to be confirmed natural conditions, our work identifies early larval stage instead egg most vulnerable for control with mites.

Compensatory growth following transient intraguild predation risk in predatory mites

Compensatory or catch-up growth following growth impairment caused by transient environmental stress, due to adverse abiotic factors or food, is widespread in animals. Such growth strategies commonly balance retarded development and reduced growth. They depend on the type of stressor but are unknown for predation risk, a prime selective force shaping life history. Anti-predator behaviours by im...

Social Familiarity Reduces Reaction Times and Enhances Survival of Group-Living Predatory Mites under the Risk of Predation

BACKGROUND Social familiarity, which is based on the ability to recognise familiar conspecific individuals following prior association, may affect all major life activities of group-living animals such as foraging, reproduction and anti-predator behaviours. A scarcely experimentally tested explanation why social familiarity is beneficial for group-living animals is provided by limited attention...

Predatory Identity Can Explain Nest Predation Patterns

Knowledge of dominant predators is necessary to identifY predation patterns and mitigate losses to nest predation, especially for endangered songbirds. We monitored songbird nests with timelapse infrared video cameras at Fort Hood Military Reservation, Texas, from 1997 to 2002 and 2005, and in Austin, Texas, during 2005, 2006, 2008, and 2009. Predation was the most common source of nest failure...

Slow-Release Sachets of Neoseiulus cucumeris Predatory Mites Reduce Intraguild Predation by Dalotia coriaria in Greenhouse Biological Control Systems

Intraguild predation of Neoseiulus cucumeris Oudemans (Phytoseiidae) by soil-dwelling predators, Dalotia coriaria Kraatz (Staphylinidae) may limit the utility of open rearing systems in greenhouse thrips management programs. We determined the rate of D. coriaria invasion of N. cucumeris breeder material presented in piles or sachets, bran piles (without mites), and sawdust piles. We also observ...
